The Statesman

The Statesman is Stony Brook University's oldest and most prestigious publication. As an accredited newspaper, they are recognized and respected as a credible source for Long Island.

Monthly Analytics

I was responsible for gathering the monthly analytics from the Stateman's WordPress website and social media. I compiled all data and presented it to our newsroom each month.

Weekly Newsletters

I wrote and designed The Statesman's email newsletter every week using the MailChimp platform. The newsletters included upcoming Statesman events and the most recent articles.

Event Planning & Fundraising

I was tasked with designing, organizing, and hosting Statesman events to connect with the campus community, fundraise, and promote special editions.

Monthly Analytics 

I collected engagement data from The Statesman's website page (Google Analytics), social media pages, and newsletters each month. Below is an example of an analytics presentation, including the analysis I presented to the newsroom. The presentation was a new initiative I brought to the position that allowed the editor-in-chief, managing editors, and section leaders to identify areas of growth and brainstorm ways to improve audience engagement for the following month. 

Article of the Month and Section of the Month were two initiatives I implemented at The Statesman. The recognition awards served as a motivator for our writers and section leaders. Winners were presented with a certificate they could use for their LinkedIn pages or resumes. 

College Media Madness Campaign

College Media Madness is an annual fundraising competition hosted by Syracuse University's newspaper, The Daily Orange. Participating student newsrooms had a month to raise funds for their publication in order to remain independent and unbiased newsrooms. This was The Statesman's first year participating.

This campaign allowed the Statesman to surpass their $1,200 fundraising goal and gain attention from other newsrooms nationwide.

I designed these managing editor spotlights to show our audience & alumni that the paper was worthy of their donations. The Statesman is led by talented student journalists who frequently win awards for their reporting. College newspapers are often the starting point for many successful, well-known journalists and the staff at The Statesman are no different.

Fundraising Event

To help fundraise for our College Media Madness Campaign and promote our upcoming special issue, Sex & Relationships, I organized a flower sale we held inside the campus library. The event included a table with a Statesman banner, flyers for the upcoming issue, and flowers for the fundraiser. The event allowed us to raise over $200 for the newspaper, connect with our campus audience, and get the word out about the upcoming special issue. The flower sale was such a success that The Statesman plans to make it an annual event. 

Weekly Newsletters

I was responsible for writing and designing The Statesman's weekly newsletters. All newsletters were sent via email using MailChimp. Newsletters often detailed upcoming events, news about the paper, and featured articles for that week.
